Casey County Podcast
Grassy green hills with cattle, dogs barking and bugs buzzing all around, no city buildings or hustle and bustle for miles. These make up the most comforting place I’ve ever known, and that’s just the beginning. Casey County Kentucky is where my Grandmother, Nonnie grew up. She’s taken her two daughters here their whole lives, my mom and my Aunt Sarah. This led to them taking me, my sister Lizzie, and my cousin Christopher along too. We would drive down on the weekends when we were free and summer was our favorite time to go. This place has gifted me with so many things like my faith, my love and respect for simplicity in nature, and a bond so strong with my grandmother and family that I couldn’t be more thankful for.
In Casey County there was rarely any service in the cabin we would stay in, you’d have to drive like 20 minutes for your calls and texts and things to come through. In this day and age everything revolves around technology so being away from it sometimes was so freeing. I will always consider that time away there as my greatest getaway. It has made me thankful for the times I’m not on my phone, and just enjoying what nature has to offer. Being away from technology gave me time to reflect on my own thoughts and it really made me feel happy to not be on my phone all day and just kind of keep to myself. This time also is the time I feel most urged to talk to God. There is no distraction and you can see God in this nature everywhere. God has always had a place in my life since I’ve gone to a Catholic School my whole life, but my strength in my faith has changed just a few years ago. The church in Casey County is a Christian Church and my Nonnie introducing us to it and taking us along to try it out made me have an instant connection to the teachings that had me so interested to hear more. So, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and decided to try going to Southland Christian Church near my home here in Lexington. I was nervous at first that it wouldn’t be the same as the church in Casey County, but ever since that day, I’ve gone no where else but there. Without my Nonnie and her wonderful hometown I would have probably never been involved there and for this I am forever so thankful.
Overall this place has brought me so much peace that is hard to get from this world. I’m so glad I have this second home to fall back on whenever I need that time away. I’ll continue on the love of Casey County and take my kids and their future kids there to try to give them the memories I have, and the Christian faith I am so glad to be a part of. And I have no doubt that when my Nonnie passes she will be so proud looking down on me years and years down the road as I keep up what she started.
